FAQ

  1. This policy applies to all undergraduate students at Appalachian State University who are in a degree program and have completed at least eight semesters of college or university study since high school graduation.
  2. The Board of Governors of The University of North Carolina shall impose a fifty percent (50%) tuition surcharge on students who take more than 140 degree credit hours to complete a baccalaureate degree in a four-year program or more than one hundred ten percent (110%) of the credit hours necessary to complete a baccalaureate degree in any program officially designated by the Board of Governors as a five-year program.
  3. No surcharge shall be imposed on any student who exceeds the degree credit hour limits within the equivalent of four academic years of regular term enrollment or within five academic years of regular term enrollment in a degree program officially designated by the Board of Governors as a five-year program.
  4. Students who matriculated into the university prior to fall 1994 are exempt from surcharge eligibility.

The tuition surcharge is applied to undergraduate students enrolled in a degree program at Appalachian State University as follows:

  1. For students earning a first baccalaureate degree in a program that requires no more than 128 credit hours, the surcharge shall be applied to all surcharge-applicable hours in excess of 140.
  2. For students earning a first baccalaureate degree in a UNC Board of Governors Board-approved program that requires more than 128 credit hours, the surcharge shall be applied to all surcharge-applicable hours that exceed 110 percent of the credit hours required for the degree. Such programs include those that have been officially designated by the Board of Governors as five-year programs as well as those involving double majors, or combined bachelor's/master's degrees.
  3. For students earning a baccalaureate degree other than their first, the surcharge shall be applied to all surcharge-applicable hours that exceed 110 percent of the minimum additional credit hours needed to earn the additional baccalaureate degree. The minimum additional credit hours will be determined at the time of admission to studies for the second or other baccalaureate degree.

Surcharge-applicable hours are all attempted hours from App State, including courses in-progress for the current term, failed courses, repeated courses, and course withdrawals. In addition, any hours accepted for transfer from outside of App State and added to a student's App State academic record since August 15, 2013 are surcharge-applicable, unless those credits happen to be from one of several excluded categories. For details on transfer credit exclusions prior to August 15, 2013 and various types of hours that are excluded from counting in a student's progress toward a surcharge.

Note: Students should understand that changing their major could result in excess attempted hours that will count toward the tuition surcharge threshold of 140 attempted hours. Students should also note that changing a major may not be deemed a valid reason for a waiver request by the Tuition Appeals Committee.

The surcharge is assessed in the fall and spring semesters, but not during the summer semester. Students are notified of the surcharge via their Appalachian State University email account. The charge will be applied to the student's account about 8 weeks into the semester in which they are charged. A student becomes subject to the surcharge during the first fall or spring semester where his or her attempted hours (including in-progress hours for that semester) exceed the surcharge threshold. The student will continue to receive a surcharge for surcharge-applicable hours taken during subsequent fall or spring semesters.

Appalachian State University's FICE code is 002906.

Students are not excused from class in order to register at the time their registration window opens.

Further information can be found on the Summer Sessions website.

An undergraduate student must take 12 semester hours during a regular semester in order to be classified as full-time. A graduate student must take 9 semester hours during a regular semester in order to be classified as full-time.

All students enrolled during the current term and classified as degree-seeking. This includes graduate students, undergraduate students, and "special students" officially recognized as seeking teacher certification.

Students not enrolled during the current term must be formally re-admitted to the University before having access to registration. To be re-admitted, undergraduates must contact the dean's office of the college to which they were assigned when last enrolled; graduate students and special students seeking teacher certification must contact the Registrar's Office. To be re-admitted for summer registration undergraduates must contact the Office of Summer Sessions; graduate students and special students seeking teacher certification must contact the Registrar's Office.

Initial access to the registration system is based on the student's classification and hours earned to date. Seniors and graduate students will be assigned the earliest access times. Once initial access is given, it will continue through the early registration period.

Non-degree seeking students may participate in early registration for Summer terms. Initial access to the registration system will be available towards the end of the early registration period. Non-degree seeking students may not participate in early registration for the Spring and Fall semesters.

Around Fall and Spring Break, currently enrolled students will receive notification to their Appalachian State University student e-mail account to view their registration status and initital access appointment on AppalNet. The 'Prepare for Registration' page located under the 'Registration' section in the 'Student' tab informs the student of various items that affect his or her registration, including required registration status and any holds that would prevent registration. The Schedule of Classes for the upcoming semester is available online.

Students who are enrolled in classes offered by the Office of Distance Education will receive registration instructions via email to their ASU student e-mail account. The Schedule of Classes for the upcoming semester is available online.

Check your access date/time using the Registration Status link located on the Student Services menu in AppalNET. This page includes appointment information, required advising status and any holds that would prevent registration.

Detailed information regarding Tuition and Fees can be found on the Student Accounts site.

You can see Drop/Add dates for the term on the Academic Calendar.

It depends on when you drop the class and how many classes you drop.

  • If you drop a class before or during the Drop/Add period that changes the tuition and fees hour bracket, you will get a refund for the difference in the sum of tuition and fees for your residency classification (see below). For example, if you drop before or during the Drop/Add period and your enrolled hours changes from 12 to 9 hours, you will receive the 100% of the difference between the 12+ hour tuition and fees and 9-11 hours tuition and fees. The Drop/Add period for a fall or spring term is the first five days of classes.
  • If you drop a class after the Drop/Add period, you will not receive a refund.
  • If you drop all of your classes, it is considered a withdrawal and the refund is based on the date of withdrawal. Details can be found on the Withdrawal Policy page.

Hometown information comes from the active, permanent address provided by the student. NC Newspapers use this hometown information to publish Chancellor's and Dean's Lists. Also, students who have chosen to have privacy restrictions will not appear on these lists.

The grade-point average (GPA) is a general measure of the student's academic achievement while at Appalachian State University. The GPA is determined by dividing the total number of quality points earned by the total number of quality hours attempted ("quality points" and "quality hours" are derived from courses graded A-F or WF). GPAs are not rounded but are truncated to the hundredths place so if you divide 163.1 quality points by 41 quality hours, you will get 3.978. This GPA will be considered 3.97. The GPA is computed only on the basis of coursework taken at App State. For an accurate GPA calculation and advice, you can reach out to your Advisor listed on DegreeWorks.

At the end of each grading period, grades are given in each course by letters which indicate the quality of work done by the student.

The Chancellor's list was created to provide higher recognition to those full-time students who receive a grade-point average of 3.85 or higher in any semester. An undergraduate student who carries 12 hours or more of coursework on which grade points are computed and who attains a grade-point average of 3.85 or better is placed on the Chancellor's list of honor students for that semester. Only those courses earning credit toward graduation will be used in determining eligiblity for honors.
