Eligibility Requirements for Undergraduate Students

Appalachian State University students requesting to enroll in courses through the UNC Online Exchange must meet the following criteria:

  1. Undergraduate students must be in good academic standing with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 and making satisfactory academic progress as outlined in the Academic Standing Probation and Suspension Policy. Students on academic probation are not eligible to take courses through the UNC Online Exchange.

  2.  An undergraduate degree-seeking student who is eligible to be enrolled at Appalachian State University may take up to six (6) hours of UNC Online courses per semester or up to seven (7) hours for linked courses at a participating institution if the student's academic advisor and/or Dean’s Office can certify that the coursework will count toward the student's degree program.

  3. After the registration request has been made, Dean's Office approval will be required. 

  4. If the requested course is available through Appalachian State, registration at Appalachian is strongly encouraged.

  5. A student classified as non-degree seeking is NOT permitted to enroll in courses through UNC Online per UNC System Office regulations. Such students would have to enroll directly with the institution offering the course and receive appropriate permissions.

  6. A student is not permitted to audit courses through UNC Online per UNC System Office regulations.


Eligibility Requirements for Graduate Students

Appalachian State University graduate students requesting to enroll in courses through the UNC Online Exchange must meet the following criteria: 

  1. Graduate students must be in good academic standing with a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 and making satisfactory academic progress as outlined in the Academic Standing (Probation and Suspension Policy). Students on academic probation are not eligible to take courses through the UNC Online Exchange. 

  2. Graduate degree-seeking students who are eligible to be enrolled at Appalachian State University may take up to three (3) hours of UNC Online courses per semester at a participating institution if the Graduate School and the student’s graduate advisor certify that the coursework will count toward the student’s degree program of study.

  3. After a UNC Online registration request has been made, Graduate School approval will be required. If the requested course is available through Appalachian State, approval will not be granted. 

  4. A student classified as non-degree seeking is NOT permitted to enroll in courses through UNC Online, per UNC System Office regulations. Such students would have to enroll directly with the institution offering the course and receive appropriate permissions.
