Restrictions and Limitations

Undergraduate Students

  1. The maximum total enrollment (at Appalachian State University and the visited institution) for the fall or spring semester cannot exceed 18 hours (or 7 hours for each summer term - 14 hours total) except when special approval from the Dean’s Office is granted.

  2. Students may not enroll in equivalent courses through the UNC Online Exchange if the course is offered by Appalachian State University in the same semester. Requests to take a course through the UNC Online Exchange will be reviewed based on transfer policies and established equivalencies. If the course is offered by Appalachian State University, Dean’s Office approval will be required. In summer semesters, this approval will not be granted if the course(s) is available online through Appalachian State University.

  3. Students will not be given permission to take a Capstone Experience course through the UNC Online Exchange.

  4. Undergraduate degree-seeking students may take up to six (6) hours of UNC Online courses per semester or up to seven (7) hours for linked courses at a participating institution if the student's academic advisor and/or Dean’s Office can certify that the course(s) will count toward the student's degree program.

  5. A student classified as non-degree seeking is NOT permitted to enroll in courses through UNC Online per UNC System Office regulations. Such students would have to enroll directly with the institution offering the course and receive appropriate permissions.

  6. Students will be allowed a maximum of 24 hours through the UNC Online Exchange per undergraduate degree program. However, all residency requirements must be met for graduation.

  7. Students must be eligible to earn credit at Appalachian State University for the course(s) to be taken at the visited institution.
    1. Students may not take courses for which they already have credit at Appalachian State University.
    2. Students may not repeat courses for grade forgiveness at the visited institution if they took the course at Appalachian State University.
    3. Students will not be permitted to audit a course through the UNC Online Exchange. Audits do not count in the calculation of full-time status at Appalachian State University.
    4. Credit from the visited institution will be considered transferable as long as a grade of C or better is earned in the course(s) taken at the visited institution. Please Note: Transfer credit counts in a student's attempted and earned hours, but does not factor into the student's GPA. UNC Online courses in which the student earns a C- or below at the visited institution will count in the student's attempted hours at Appalachian State University, but no credit will be awarded.
